Sat.-Mon. Oct. 9-11, 2010 Columbus Day Weekend Hiking staying at Cardigan Lodge

Thank you for your interest in the Mt. Cardigan Lodge foliage hiking weekend. To complete your trip registration and secure your spot, we ask you to please read over the Cardigan Lodge Before You Go Information (Cardigan Lodge Fact Sheet) at http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/cardigan/before-you-go.cfm and then send a check of $150 which includes 2-night lodging, 2-dinner, 2-breakfast, 2-day trail lunch, NH lodging tax, and gratuity for AMC Cardigan Lodge crew.

On Saturday 9:30 AM, the leaders will meet you at Cardigan Lodge gear room for those trip members who would like to do a 7-mile hike to Mt. Cardigan via Orange Mountain (Mt Gilbert). Please be fueled with breakfast before we meet. The lodge is full-service at this date, but meals are available only with lodging after we check-in later in the afternoon. Your Saturday’s snacks and trail lunch must be stocked the day before; local resources cannot be relied upon to be open. We’ll go through a short introduction, check gear, clothing, and water, sign the waiver form (a copy available at http://www.outdoors.org/pdf/upload/volrelease.pdf), then be on our way to Mt. Orange and Mt Cardigan. We will hike on a lesser-used route via Holt, Vistamont, Skyland, West Ridge trails and returning by Clark, Holt-Clark Cutoff, Holt and Manning trails. We will be back in time to check into our rooms and take a shower before dinner is served at Cardigan Lodge at 6 PM.

If you should miss the leaders’ Saturday hike, AMC Cardigan Lodge offers many outdoors and indoors activities you can sample from http://www.outdoors.org/pdf/upload/card-sample-explorations.pdf.

Sunday breakfast will be served at the lodge at 8 AM. The leaders will lead a 6-mile hike at 10 AM to Mt Cardigan via Firescrew Mtn offering wide-range views from the open summits and firetower.

On Monday the leaders will check out of the lodge shortly after breakfast and then lead a 3-mile hike to Welton Falls – a deep mossy ravine with attractive falls, rapids and potholes.

Monday’s check-out time is 10:30 AM. You may create your own Monday activity. AMC Cardigan Lodge offers more than 50 miles of trails for hiking (maps and guide books are available for sale at Cardigan Lodge gift shop), a nature trail and swimming pond, and family-friendly programs and theme weekends.

Essential Hiking Clothing and Gear Checklist

Attending leaders-led trips are optional. If you plan to join any of the leaders’ hikes on Saturday or Sunday, you will need the essential clothing and gear listed at http://www.outdoors.org/recreation/hiking/hiking-gear.cfm. In the Northeast's mountains, even if it feels like summer time in the valleys, it can be winterlike on the high peaks. You will need a pair of water-proof hiking boots with good ankle support and a backpack big enough to carry your hat, gloves, rain jacket with hood, rain pants, extra socks, personal first aid kit, high-energy food and snacks, two to three quarts (per person, carry more if you drink a lot) of water, headlamp with fresh batteries, sunscreen, insect repellent, plastic trash bags as pack liners to keep your gear and extra clothing dry and for carrying out trash, . It’s best to wear a synthetic layer closest to your skin to wick away moisture from perspiration. Wool and some synthetics also retain their insulating properties, even when wet. Dress in layers to allow you to easily adjust to the heat, cold and wind. Rain poncho, jeans and sneakers will not be safe enough for our above tree-line hikes and therefore they will not be accepted in leaders-led hikes.

Trip Cancellation Policy

Cancellation must be notified by writing or email to the leaders. Reservations canceled more than 31 days in advance will receive a full refund. Reservations canceled 15-30 days in advance will result in a 70% refund of the full payment amount less $20 trip registration fee. The $20 will be part of the group's gratuity for AMC Cardigan Lodge crew. No refunds for cancellations within 15 days of stay.

Trip Photograph Posting

The leaders usually will take trip photographs both group and casual as you can see from our prior trips’ photographs in 2009 and 2008. The leaders reserve the right to post photographs on public websites. If you have any questions about the posting policy of our trip photographs, please let one of the leaders know as soon as you can.

If you are interested in joining us, please respond to all fields below, and indicate “None” in any field where the circumstances are not applicable, rather than leaving a blank space.
